After four home games on the bounce, we head to Rugby for our sixth league game of the season this Sunday, 4th October, with kick-off at 3pm.
It’s a meeting between two of the league’s current top four, with the Feds sitting fourth after three wins and two defeats from our opening five league fixtures, while Rugby Borough are second with four wins and one loss.
The Feds go into the game on the back of a 1–0 victory over Middlesbrough FC Women at Walton Hall Park last weekend. It was a hard-fought performance, with the Feds creating chances and McAloon making some important saves to keep the scores level. Brady broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, reacting quickest to the second ball before calmly slotting her finish past the keeper. From there, the Feds dug in defensively to protect their lead, with Johnson producing a brilliant challenge late on as we saw out a clean sheet and a valuable three points.
Emma Johnson was named Player of the Match, sponsored by Pod and Bean Coffee.
Now the Feds face another tough test on the road as they look to build on that result and come away from Rugby with another three points.
THE OPPOSITION – RUGBY BOROUGH
Rugby Borough have made a strong start to the season and currently sit second in the Northern Premier Division, with four wins from their opening five league games. Their only defeat came last time out, when they went down 2–1 away at West Bromwich Albion.
Rugby Borough are one of the independent clubs in the league, with a set-up that brings together men’s, women’s, girls’, boys’ and grassroots football under one club. The club dates back to 1994, while the women’s side has its own history, beginning as Coventry City Ladies before becoming Coventry United Ladies. In 2023, the team relocated to Rugby and became Rugby Borough Women, moving into Kilsby Lane as their new home and giving them the opportunity to build a longer-term future in the women’s game.
There’s been plenty of progress since then. The side reached the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2024, where they faced Liverpool, and finished third in the Northern Premier Division last season, as well as lifting the County Challenge Cup. The club has also continued to develop its women’s pathway, with a Female Talent Pathway and U21 development squad now forming part of the wider set-up.
There are a few players Feds supporters might want to keep an eye on too. Lily Greenslade is one to watch in attack, having scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Sporting Khalsa last season, while midfielder Ebony Wiseman is one of the established names in the squad and one of the players who made the move from Coventry United to Rugby Borough. Wiseman is also involved in the club’s female pathway, coaching within the Advanced Training Centre.
It’s another interesting test for the Feds against a side who, like us, have been building their own identity and infrastructure within the women’s game.
