A last minute heartbreak against the top of the league, did not over shadow Liverpool Feds performance on Sunday afternoon at Jericho Lane.
Feds got off to a strong start when Jukes’ deep freekick caused problems in the box with Johnson getting up well. The hosts’ pressure continued as Collins flew down the right before delivering a pull back into the box, Donoghue got her strike off but it was well blocked.
Wolves threatened to take the lead as their winger was found in behind and was bearing down on goal, calling Norney into a huge save to keep the scores level.
The home side almost found a way to score as a looping Jukes cross was misjudged by the Wolves defender. Anderson ghosted in at the back post and connected on the volley but her effort went narrowly wide.
Liverpool Feds maintained the same aggressive and strong approach after the break, with Collins bursting down the right. Her early cross was a dangerous one with Anderson and a Wolves defender flying into the box, missing it out.
They kept pressuring the visitors with Donoghue through 1v1, forcing the Wolves keeper to make a great save.
Feds scent of goal came as Johnson battled in the middle of the park releasing Collins, whose early effort smashed off the post.
Despite the chances created, the hosts found themselves behind as the ball was turned in from a goalmouth scramble following a set-piece.
5 minutes later Feds would get the equaliser. Johnson started the move in her own half before finding herself on the end of an Anderson flick in the box. Johnson battled to keep the ball in and managed to cut the ball to Thompson. The skippers smart swivel rolled 3 defenders before firing home into the bottom corner.
Wolves changed their approach and first forced a huge save from Norney, who got across her goal well to stop the goal bound back post header. Then the last-minute winner from substitute Racheal Quigley, meeting Amber Hughes’ cross, sealed the deal.
The final score was harsh on Liverpool and didn’t reflect how their performance was for much of the game. Despite the injury time heart break against top of the league, it was brilliant performance, and the Feds will be up against South Shields in the second round of the FA Women’s Cup on Sunday the 24th.
